Children truly are the centre of our world! We as parents love to lavish them with gifts and ‘spoil’ them a little too. But it is quite important to teach our children that it is better to give than to receive. The article below gives some tips that will help you help your child discover the joy of being generous.
Let them ‘earn’ their own money
You really can’t give away something that is not rightfully yours! So when you encourage your children to give, make sure they give their own money. You can let them earn their cash by ‘paying’ them money when they do their chores. It’s indeed a great way to teach your children the art of being economical too! Of course during special events, festivals and birthdays, you can give them some pocket money to spend as they wish too. Encourage them to give away portions of their own funds when they choose to give and they will truly discover the joys of a generous heart!
Set an example
Make sure you practice generosity before you preach to your children too! Show your children how to give with a joyful heart, expecting nothing at all in return. Take them with you when you visit local charities. Don’t miss the opportunities that you get to be kind and generous too. You have to make sure you give with a happy heart too because if you don’t they will think giving is a chore!
You can donate money to a charity on your birthday and your children may decide to donate too instead of asking for childrens parties . During Christmas too, encourage your children to share the gifts that they receive with the less fortunate by doing so yourself.
Get their help in choosing presents
You can get your children involved in the process of selecting presents for relatives and friends. Show them that it is important to buy a gift that is worthy of the relationship that you share with the giver. Tell them that money can always be earned but the opportunities to be generous come to us only now and then. Let them think out of the box too! If they say they want to take their cousins to a laser tag Liverpool game area for their birthdays, gladly oblige. They will feel like they ‘own’ the experience and so it will become even more meaningful to them.
Praise them when they give
Your children love to impress and please you, so be generous with your compliments when they are generous with their money! Tell them that you are proud of them and let them know that they did the right thing. The words that you speak today will certainly guide their actions tomorrow!
Hope you become more generous and joyful as a family!
